Surface preparation
Cleanliness
– Remove salt, cleaning agents, contaminants and marine growth with fresh water using high-pressure cleaning.
New build:
– Untreated surface:
Prepare the surface with Hempel’s Light Primer and apply a tiecoat of Hempel’s Underwater Primer while the surface is still tacky.
– Untreated surface:
Prepare the prepared surface with Hempel’s Premium Primer. Apply one coat of Hempel’s Pro Tiecoat.
Maintenance and repair:
– Existing old self-polishing or traditional antifouling:
Remove loose material and contaminants by high-pressure cleaning with fresh water.
– Existing hard antifouling or an unknown antifouling:
Clean under high pressure with fresh water, wet sand, remove dust.
– Clean and dry the surface.
– If the old anti-fouling paint layer is in poor condition, it is recommended to remove the old layers and apply a primer before applying the anti-fouling layer.
– If the old antifouling is in poor condition, apply 1 coat of Hempel’s Underwater Primer as a sealer or Hempel’s Pro Tiecoat.
Application
– Thinner: Hempel’s Thinner 08080
– Cleaner: Hempel’s Thinner 08080 / Hempel’s Thinner 808 08081
Maximum thinning:
- Roller 5%
- Brush 5%
- Paint Pad 5%
If the vessel is regularly used at speeds higher than 20 knots, we recommend applying 3 coats of anti-fouling paint. The product can be applied by means of spray.
Keep thinning to an absolute minimum.
Application conditions
– Prevent condensation by applying to a clean and dry surface with a temperature more than 3°C above the dew point.
Relative humidity:
– The relative humidity must be lower than 85% during drying and curing.
Coverage:
– 13 m²/L
Drying time
Surface temperature 30°C – 20°C – 10°C
Dust dry in minutes: 9 15 30
Surface dry in hours: 2 4 8
Overcoating
See overcoating table (see Product Information Sheet)
Drying conditions
– To achieve the indicated drying time, it is important to maintain sufficient ventilation during application, drying and curing.
– Condensation formation on freshly applied coating must be avoided.
Overcoating details
– No maximum overcoating time, but after prolonged exposure to a contaminated atmosphere, contaminants must be removed by washing with (high-pressure) fresh water. Then let the surface dry.
– The surface must be clean before overcoating.
